What is a pilot car?
A pilot car, also called an escort vehicle, travels with an oversize or overweight load to scout the route, warn other drivers and keep the load driver informed. See What Is a Pilot Car?
Do I need a pilot car for my load?
It depends on your dimensions, route and the permit for each state. The permit sets the number and type of escorts. See When Is a Pilot Car Required?
What is the difference between a lead and a chase car?
The lead car drives ahead scouting for hazards and clearances. The chase car follows behind, watching rear traffic and the load. See lead vs. chase.
What does a high pole pilot car do?
It leads a tall load with a height pole set just above the load's highest point to check overhead clearance. See how a high pole works.
What is a steer escort?
The term usually refers to the person steering a rear axle on a long trailer, which FHWA calls a tillerman or steerman. Rules and licensing differ by state. See steer escorts explained.
Does a pilot car need special equipment?
Commonly an amber warning light, oversize load signs, flags, a two-way radio, a stop/slow paddle, a fire extinguisher, reflective triangles or cones and safety apparel, plus a height pole when required. Exact requirements vary by state.
How much does a pilot car cost?
It depends on distance, duration, the number and type of escorts, route complexity and schedule. We do not publish an average because rates vary. See what affects pricing.
How do I book a pilot car?
Request a quote with your dimensions, route, dates and permit details. Dispatch will confirm positions, availability and price. Use our quote form, call (601) 633-9096, or text us.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can. More notice means more options, especially on multi-day or multi-state moves. We handle short-notice requests when we can, but cannot promise availability.
Which states do you cover?
We serve 48 states, using our own vehicles and our established network of escort drivers. Send us your route and dispatch will confirm coverage. See our service area.
Is an out-of-state certification valid everywhere?
Not necessarily. Not all states accept certification from other states, and each has its own additional rules. See requirements, certification and insurance.
Are you insured?
Yes. TCB Escorts is $1 Million Insured. To get documentation, use Request Insurance & Credentials.
Do you require a deposit?
No deposit is required. Payment is due upon completion of the service or under Net 15 terms, as agreed with you. See our Booking & Cancellation Policy.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled pickup. A $250 fee applies if the customer cancels after the driver has already arrived at the designated pickup location.
Who gets the permit?
The carrier or permit holder obtains the permit for each state. Your escort company needs a copy of the permit and route survey to confirm positions and conditions.
