What a pilot car does
The operator drives a separate vehicle, usually marked with an amber warning light, flags and an oversize load sign, positioned ahead of the load, behind it, or both. From that position they see things the load driver cannot: what is around the next curve, what is coming up the road, and how traffic is reacting to the load. They pass that along over a two-way radio so the driver has time to act.
FHWA's Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operators Best Practices Guidelines (published in 2017) calls the driver a pilot/escort vehicle operator, or P/EVO, and describes the main job as protecting and enhancing public safety.
Why an oversize load needs one
A wide, tall or long load does not drive like a normal truck. According to FHWA, it needs more distance to stop, change lanes and pass, has larger blind spots, can swing wide in turns, and may struggle to merge or climb grades. A pilot car gives the driver the information and the margin to deal with that.
Pilot car or escort vehicle?
The two terms mean the same thing in everyday use. "Pilot car" is the common name in the trucking world. "Escort vehicle" tends to appear in state regulations. You will see both on permits and quotes.
The main positions
- Lead: drives ahead of the load and watches for hazards and clearances.
- Chase: follows behind and watches rear traffic and the load.
- High pole: a lead vehicle carrying a height pole to check overhead clearance.
- Steer: support for steering a long or articulated trailer. The meaning varies by state.
We explain each in lead vs. chase, high pole and steer guides.
Who decides whether you need one
The state does, through the permit. FHWA notes that a permit typically sets the route, travel days and times, and the number of escorts. Because each state issues its own, a move that crosses several states can have different escort conditions along the way. Read when a pilot car is required for how to work it out.
